Mauro “Maher” Hamza |
Centralized Disciplinary Database | U.S. Center for SafeSport (uscenterforsafesport.org).
International Fencing Federation official website (fie.org)

On November 7,
2023, Safesport announced its decision to ban for life Mauro “Maher” Hamza from
US fencing, citing sexual misconduct against minors as the reason for the ban. The case is subject to appeal. Fencing
coach Mauro Hamza ruled ineligible by US Center for SafeSport (usatoday.com)
It seems that Safesport’
s ban arose from a civil lawsuit brought by Jane Doe in 2021, against Hamza and USA Fencing Note that Jane Doe is a fictitious name used
to protect the identity of the woman who claims she was molested by Hamza when
she was a minor. Link to the copy of the civil case is at the bottom of the page.
It should be
noted that Hamza – according to the Safesport
database, had already been suspended in 2014, for sexual misconduct. Centralized
Disciplinary Database | U.S. Center for SafeSport (uscenterforsafesport.org) Hamza then returned to Egypt where he
remains today. Hamza is currently the national foil coach for Egypt and in fact
he was in Istanbul for the FIE foil event.
The FIE now needs
to resolve the following issue. Should an individual who has been disbarred
from a national federation, for sexual misconduct of minors, be allowed to participate
in FIE competitions representing another country? It is important to note that the FIE has also adopted Safe Sport.
In fact, the FIE Safe Sport webpage states in pertinent part:
“The FIE is committed to ensuring
fencing is practiced in a safe environment, where athletes can develop
harmoniously and all the members of the FIE Family are granted respect and are
protected from all forms of harassment and abuse.” INTERNATIONAL
FENCING FEDERATION - The International Fencing Federation official website
(fie.org)
Regardless, the
FIE executive committee should amend the FIE statute so that permanent bans
arising from national federations are also recognized and enforced by the FIE.
